Serving Together-Mentoring With Purpose

Mentoring |Employment Services | Addiction Recovery

Establish systems whereby persons returning to the community from jail/ prison and persons recovering from addictions will have supportive and caring mentor-type relationships with adults in their community.

Ex-offenders and persons in addiction treatment programs are often required to perform community service. The Serving Together program provides opportunities for community service workers to work along side adult mentors to clean  local area Church facilities and maintain the outside property each week. The Churches and Community Service workers benefit from relationships they develop with caring adults from their community.

70 x7 life recovery mentoring program

Each week Church staff, volunteer mentors, and community members sit down and eat a meal with our Community Service volunteers. As they get to know and care for each other, adult mentors begin assisting with other areas of basic needs, such as housing, food and employment. Mentors also provide transportation and sit with Community Service workers who begin attending weekend worship services.

Employment Services

Ensure individuals released from jail/prison and those recovering from alcohol and drug addictions are able to secure employment.

Persons coming home from prison/jail have many needs—and one of their biggest needs is to “land a
job.” A 1996 study (employment servicespublished in an article What employers want: Job prospects for less-educated workers), reported that 65% of employers in five major U.S. cities would not “knowingly hire a person with a criminal record, regardless of the offense.” Providing employment for prisoners re-entering their community makes sense on so many levels. It is a compassionate outreach on a human level—helping people who’ve made some bad decisions in life. It is beneficial to the community—ensuring ex-offenders become productive citizens.

To date, 70x7 has formed two business entities which provide transitional employment opportunities for the formally incarcerated.

New Day Staffing is a transitional employment agency providing dependable, hard working individuals to local employers. Its workforce has gone through a structured process designed to identify individuals who have exhibited a strong desire to change the way they have lived their life in the past and become a productive part of our community.  Being able to support themselves through gainful employment is a key starting point in that journey. Many business owners have a desire to hire the ex-offender but are concerned about the potential liability and risk associated with employment. New Day Staffing accepts those risks by providing workers compensation coverage, unemployment insurance and liability insurance for their employees that are placed at local businesses. Following a period of transitional employment where the employee is given a chance to prove themselves, most employers hire them as permanent employees, providing employment stability and security. To assist the New Day Staffing employee in successfully re-integrating back to society, 70x7 Life Recovery provides each individual with a mentor for at least a one year period. This mentor relationship also provides the business owner a level of assurance that the employee will be successful on the job. No other staffing agency provides this level of support for the employer and employee. It is truly a “Win-Win” solution for everyone.

New Day Construction provides professional construction services while developing marketable skills to the formally incarcerated employee. Through this apprenticeship program, an employee develops construction skills over a 1-2 year period and enables the individual to then seek other employment in the construction industry. New Day Construction is led by Brian Wolthuis, an experienced licensed builder. Additionally, each crew leader is a licensed builder. Customers engaging New Day Construction to build, remodel or repair their property receive quality construction, but also benefit in knowing that they are helping others to earn a living, learn a marketable skill, and become a productive member of society.

Addiction Recovery

Ensure there are an adequate number of drug/alcohol recovery meetings and use the 12-Step Programs model

The organization’s first 12-Step Programs meeting was in 1998—three people met faithfully each week (it was a year before anyone else started attending the meeting). Three years later, 12-Step Programs , Christians in Recovery and Alanon meetings were being held weekly at the “Farmhouse” Drug Addiction Recovery Seriviceswith an average attendance of 10 people at each meeting. Celebrate Recovery (now called Healing Path) was also started. In 2002, Farmhouse Life Recovery was given the Spirit of Volunteerism Distinguished Organization award by United Way for its work in addiction recovery.

In 2003, with rumors that the farmhouse was going to be shut down, a new name was developed. Based on Matthew 18:21-22, the new name, 70 x 7 Life Recovery, signified that forgiveness is always available. During the next several years, 70 x 7 really took off. The Healing Path Band received a distinguished organization award that year for their incredible flexibility and willingness to play wherever they were needed. 70 x 7 teamed up with Pine Rest and OAR to bring the first ever Recoveryfest. Approximately 75 people attended the first Recoveryfest; five years later more than 800 people attended this annual event. B2B teen recovery group for teens was started as a joint effort between 70x7 and Catholic Social Services.

Today Christian Recovery Fellowship services are held throughout the Holland/Zeeland area. About 250 people attend the various 12-Step Programs and Christian Recovery Fellowship meetings each week. Via Sunday van pick-ups, men and women from private homes, the Holland Rescue Mission, Harbor House and Chester Ray have transportation to worship services and Christian Recovery Fellowship Recovery meetings. Most recently 70 x 7 began hosting male sexual addiction recovery support groups; modeled after the 12-Step Program.
